Promoting corporate accountability and the human rights responsbilities of business

RAID advocates for binding corporate accountability frameworks, particularly the development of international norms on the human rights responsibilities of companies. A major focus of RAID's work involves holding companies that fail to adhere to the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises to account.

RAID has been at the forefront to hold companies to account for failing to adhere to the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. RAID filed the first case in 2001 and has since been involved in filing approximately two dozens complaints, including spearheading the filing of all the complaints against the companies alleged to be involved in the illegal export of natural resources in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

ESCR-Net
RAID also co-coordinates the International Network for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights' (ESCR-Net) Corporate Accountability Working Group, which strives to strengthen corporate accountability for human rights through the collective efforts and advocacy of grassroots groups and NGOs around the world. For more information, go to: www.escr-net.org

OECD Watch
RAID helped found and co-coordinates OECD Watch, an international network of civil society organisations promoting corporate accountability.  OECD Watch also monitors governments' implementation of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and the work of the OECD's Investment Committee. For more information, go to: www.oecdwatch.org

About the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises

The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises are the only multilateral corporate responsibility instrument that has been adopted by members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) plus several non-members.

06 Mar In December 2006, the UK’s Serious Fraud Office terminated its corruption investigation into BAE Systems’ Al Yamamah military contract with Saudi Arabia.  The Corner House and Campaign Against Arms Trade have initiated a legal challenge to the decision. Transparency International states the decision "poses the most significant threat to the success of the OECD Convention since it was adopted in 1997". In January, 140 NGOs called on Prime Minister Tony Blair to re-open the corruption investigation.
